Daphne hadn't waited up for Bay to get home. She'd finished her deliveries for the catering jobs she'd gotten, stopped by City Hall to watch the effigy burn (bee-free this time), had a glass of champagne and gone home and to bed.

But when she woke up and there was still no Bay, she started to worry. Especially when she looked outside and saw that the city was at a standstill, blanketed in deep snow. And when Bay didn't respond to half a dozen increasingly panicked texts, she really started freaking. Desperate she tried Scott, with the same result. She didn't know Scott's mom's number, and all she could do was hope that they had gone there after the party. Maybe they were just hung over and sleeping late. It was possible. She wouldn't relax until she heard from one of them, though.

The apartment was too still, too empty, and she couldn't get anywhere else. She was going to go out of her mind, she was pretty sure. "I have to get out of here," she told Milo. "Stay. Be good." She grabbed her phone and tucked it into a pocket, then packed a half-dozen muffins into a bakery box and headed downstairs to Juno's.

She knocked, hoping her friend was home, at least. She was starting to feel jumpy and on-edge. What if everyone had disappeared again? Including Bay and Scott this time? What if she was snowed in and alone?

Bay was late. It wasn't a big deal yet, she was still cooking, but she could use help with garnishing and boxing the food that was ready, and if she didn't have everything boxed and loaded in about the next 30 minutes, she was going to be late with this catering order. They were still not as frequent as she'd like, beyond her morning orders for baked goods around the city, and every good performance equaled good word-of-mouth. That was important, it was critical at this point.

She got some oil heating in a skillet to start working on the fried foods, since they needed to be relatively fresh, and then she pulled out her phone and sent a video chat request to Bay.

The kitchen was a mess, but the order was almost finished. An assortment of canapés, petit-fours, some of the bruschetta that she'd had at the cake run was all going to a wealthy client's party. The hot courses were being handled by the client's personal chef, but she'd been hired to provide the bites for before and after, which was fine. It was evidence that she was getting her name out there, if nothing else.

Now if Bay could just get home with the car so she could deliver it all on time, this would be perfect. She started packing everything into boxes, keeping one eye on keeping everything immaculate, one eye on the light on her kitchen timer for the last batch of hot food, and one eye on the door waiting for Bay. She was running out of eyes.

When they'd first got their packets and had been assigned to adjoining apartments it had seemed like the perfect set-up. That way they would both be nearby but would have their privacy. It had only taken a single night on her own in the apartment to change her mind on that front, though. All alone in an empty apartment, unable to hear if someone was moving around, without the security of knowing Bay was right there--she'd slept horribly, fitfully, getting up several times to walk through the apartment and make sure she was alone, checking the locks on the door and windows.

Finally around 4 AM she'd given up altogether and sat down at the kitchen table with her laptop. There were other arguments she could make, more logical ones than 'I don't like being all alone in my apartment', and she made the spreadsheet to prove it. Financially, sharing an apartment with Bay was a good idea. They could split the cost of rent and supplies that way, and with the monthly income this place granted to each resident, they wouldn't even need to work if they didn't want to. Plus they could share the chores. She could cook for them both, she was even willing to take care of the finances. God knew she'd helped her mom sort out bills often enough, and this time she wouldn't even have to juggle due dates and late notices and disconnect warnings.

This done she showered and got dressed, then made a batch of fresh banana muffins. By 7:30 she was at Bay's door, too impatient to wait any longer. She hoped that wasn't a mistake. By now, Bay should be used to earlier mornings than she had been at home, right?

She took a deep breath and knocked, plastering a smile on her face, with the plate of muffins held out in offering.

Daphne blinked her eyes open, frowning as she lay in bed. The light looked weird and--wait, she hadn't fallen asleep at Wilke's last night, what was she even doing in a hut?

It was then that she realized she could hear. She couldn't identify what she was hearing, but there were so many sounds, it was almost overwhelming. "Whoa. I can hear," she murmured. It was strange to hear her own voice, loud and clear.

She blamed the newly-recovered hearing for the fact that it took her almost a full minute to realize she wasn't alone in bed. She turned over, still expecting Wilke even though the hut looked different--and shrieked when there was someone else in bed next to her. She scooted away and managed to fall out of the bed in the process.

That was when she realized she was naked, and did her best to cover the body that...wasn't hers. This just got better and better. She was so not awake enough to process all of this.

It had taken Daphne a week before she went back to the food truck, just to check it out and remove the bow, the first time. It was well-stocked with equipment and supplies, but it also had so much emotional baggage packed into every corner, she wasn't sure she could get past that and put it to good use.

But a few more days of staying away, thinking about all of the possibilities, all of the potential to do something all on her own in this place, had her back today, poking through the supplies with a pen and a notepad, taking inventory of everything the place had, checking out the various appliances (she'd need to talk to the building crew and see if they could hook it up with electricity and water, but there were some geniuses on the island, she was pretty sure they could manage it somehow) and figuring out what she would do with it. She had the side open to air out the truck and keep it cooler, though she was watching for anyone to approach so she could turn them away--for now.

Daphne wasn't going to waste the chance to have an awesome 'Christmas in New York City' type date with no expense spared, even if any shopping would probably not survive the change back to the island. She was okay with that, it would still be fun shopping without a budget.

She also wasn't going to sit around and wait for Wilke to come up with the idea. She had a feeling the island wouldn't stay like this long enough for that to bear fruit, after all. Which is why she bundled up in a cute mint green and cream striped sweater, jeans, and a warm coat, and marched up to Wilke's apartment, knocking firmly.

"Get your coat, you're taking me on a date," she announced as soon as he opened the door.

He waited until she picked up her guitar, then took her free hand in his and walked them, quickly, towards the building, leading her down to the floor he practically had to himself these days.

Daphne clung to his hand as she followed, grateful for his rapid pace. She couldn't wait to get him alone and pick up where they'd left off.

When they reached his room she pulled away just long enough to set the guitar down safely on the unclaimed bed before she turned back to him and all but threw herself at him, her hands slipping beneath his shirt to caress his abdomen as she leaned up for a kiss.

Daphne wasn't specifically looking for Wilke, but he'd been on her mind in the last few days, and not in a good way, or at least not in the way she'd prefer to have him on her mind. The awkwardness between them wasn't just going to go away on its own, she knew. It was time for them to have a serious conversation, as much as those sucked to have.

When she spotted him on the beach, she decided there was no time like the present--although she did allow herself a few minutes to psyche herself up and to watch him as he moved, playing lacrosse with the waves. She smiled, her eyes running appreciatively over his body, then squared her shoulders and moved purposefully across the beach. "Wilke!"

Daphne woke to a shaking pillow, frowning and sitting up. She felt weird, disoriented. She rubbed her eyes and looked around, not recognizing anything in her surroundings, and her heart started pounding. "...Mom?" she called, clutching the blanket against her as her gaze fell on the sleeping stranger in the next bed. A whimper of fear, of panic escaped her as her head whipped around and she scooted toward the headboard, her eyes wild. "Mom!"

When they finally made it back from their unexpected adventure to the second island, Daphne left the others and grabbed a change of clothes from her room before heading for the shower. She cleaned herself up and washed her hair, then dried off and got dressed, pulling her wet hair back into a braid.

She stopped by her room again, dropping her dirty clothes into the basket she used for a hamper, then looked at her bed, considering just lying down and taking a nap. But though she was tired, she was also keyed up, and kind of wanted to talk to someone about what had happened. She wished for a moment that Emmett was there, because that was who she would normally go to when she wanted to talk. But there was someone else who was here that she could talk to, she realized. She'd have to talk instead of or at least in addition to signing, because while Wilke's ASL was improving, he still wasn't good enough to keep up with a fluent signer. But she could snuggle against him while she told him about it, which sounded really appealing just then.

She checked herself in the mirror briefly and then headed to his room, pausing outside the curtain to knock on the frame, hoping she caught him.

Daphne didn't know how long the graffiti had been on the compound wall, she didn't get around to the back of the building that often. She hadn't seen it when the compound had been all wild wild west, but today she'd just been wandering around, checking out the garden, then going to visit the chickens, and she'd seen it: the same street art that had been all over Kansas City, the little girl with axes and hammers.

There was only one possible explanation. She knew she hadn't done it, and was pretty sure Wilke hadn't done it, so that narrows it down to one plausible suspect.

She headed directly into their shared room, finding Bay already there, which saved her the trouble of tracking her roommate down. "Hi. We need to talk."

All things considered, Daphne had liked Victorian island better than Wild West island. The clothes had been more flattering, for one. She'd preferred the scenery, too. But no one had consulted her, so she was making the best of things.

She was dressed in a dress that made her feel a little silly, a matching bonnet that did at least keep the sun off her face, and calf-high lace-up boots, sturdy and sensible. She had a book tucked under one arm and a basket with some muffins and cheese and bread and juice, in case she got hungry. She wandered the settlement for a while before finally finding a bench in the shade of one of the buildings. She tucked the basket beneath the bench, settled down comfortably, and began to read Tom Sawyer.

Daphne had decided to take Bella's recommendation and seek out Kate for some relationship advice--as it were. She didn't actually have a relationship, of course, which was part of the problem. And the two sides of this particular coin were starting to give her a headache.

She hung around the children's office near the end of Kate's shift, waiting for her to finish up so she could at least ask if she could have some time, if not right now than whenever Kate had a minute. Just hopefully soon. She couldn't keep running hot and cold on Wilke like this, it wasn't fair to him, but at the same time the thought of giving up on Kon without even knowing definitively if there was something to give up on made her heart ache a little.

Daphne had been a little nervous when she'd signed up for the swing dance competition, but she wanted to show off some of what she'd learned in Alcuin's class.

Once the partners had been announced, she'd moved to a lot nervous. She was paired with Guy Burgess, someone older than her that she didn't really know that well. Someone she didn't know what to expect from, how he would feel about having a deaf dance partner.

But she'd never let nerves or her deafness keep her from taking action, so she'd gotten directions to his home and made her way there, knocking firmly and without hesitation as she stood on the porch, waiting and hoping he was home so she could introduce herself and get the whole 'I'm deaf' thing out of the way.

[For Bay]

Back home, Daphne had stayed up much later than she did on the island. Here, she had shifts at the bakery that started ridiculously early, so half the time she was in bed shortly after dinner, and was usually asleep by the time Bay even got in. It was one of the nice things about being deaf; as long as Bay didn't turn on the light, she could sleep through just about anything. No amount of noise would wake her, after all.

She was fast asleep tonight, alarm set for 2:30 so she had time to get up and shower, dress and grab some breakfast before starting her shift.

Daphne sat on a rock at the edge of the waterfall's pool, leaning back on her hands and dangling her feet into the cool water. It was a peaceful place, with a constant cool mist on her face and the low vibration of the falls thrumming through her arms. The bikini she wore wasn't exactly what she'd had in mind, but the clothes box refused to give her a one-piece or even a tankini, so she'd given up and gone with the best one it had offered. At least it was cute and not too skimpy. And the little skirt that went over the bottoms was actually kind of adorable, she thought.

Her head tilted back, soaking up the sun's rays, eyes half-closed as she just relaxed and basked. Most of the time she was active, either working in the bakery, going to school, working out or just shooting some hoops, but right now--she was taking a rare moment to just be. To not dwell on all of the things that tried to creep back into her thoughts. It took some effort, but the setting helped.

Daphne had shown Bay around the compound, given her a quick run-down on island life, and then Bay had decided to go explore the carnival that she'd abruptly appeared in on her own, much to Daphne's relief. She needed time to process this new development, to decide how she felt about Bay's presence here. Of all the people who could show up, it had to be Bay.

She went into her room, glancing at the empty bed across the way that would be housing Bay at least for a couple of days before unpacking the Deafenstein t-shirt that had appeared that morning, a present from her best friend that she couldn't even thank him for. She changed into the shirt, smoothing her hand down the front, and then looked around the room before sighing and going back out into the hallway. She thought for a moment, then went next door and knocked on the doorframe, hoping Dairine was there.
