Daphne will miss most of what goes on after the knock--the hollered, "Just a minute!" and the clatter of a stack of books falling off something, though the last at least might shake the door a little. So it's a longer than usual moment's wait before the door swings open, and Dairine, looking a bit mad-scientist, pokes her head out.
